Travel Journals: Students' Bound Books

Marilyn 1Today I'm sharing the work of two students who are working in bound books. The first two images are from Marilyn McGuire's handmade journal; to make it she sewed signatures with different types of paper, mostly lighter weight and smoother surfaced papers to allow for penwork and elegant calligrpahy, included pointed pen.Marilyn 2

The next two images are from Allison Dennis' journal, a book that she received as a gift. It is filled with a beautiful handmade paper with a rough surface, and the texture gives alot of richness to the painting. Allison's journal
One week I suggested that students try a page with various windows or cupolas, domes and steeples; and she found some great examples to include-- my photo of her windows page shows a work in progress. For the window on the left I suggested starting with a light drawing of a diamond grid to make it easier to fit the tiny panes neatly into a regular pattern.

What fine work. Many kudos to Marilyn and Allison ~ and to their teacher as well.
